Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal Takes Major Step to Manage Hazardous Hospital Waste

Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal addressed a special event held in collaboration with Indus Hospital and the Global Fund, announcing the launch of a “Yellow Van” project for the safe disposal of hazardous hospital waste across Pakistan.

"Prevention is better than cure — if we don't take preventive measures, we will be surrounded by diseases," said Mustafa Kamal.

This model project will initially operate in 15 districts of Pakistan, where specially equipped vehicles will collect and dispose of medical waste. In Islamabad, the first van will be handed over to the District Health Officer (DHO).

Highlighting the dangers of improper waste disposal, the minister stated:

"Hospital waste is dangerous. Wherever it passes, it spreads disease. This step is crucial to protect people from illness."

Key points shared by Minister Mustafa Kamal:

  • 68% of diseases in Pakistan are caused by contaminated drinking water.

  • Ensuring clean water, controlling population growth, and disposing of toxic hospital waste will reduce disease burden.

  • Preventive healthcare must be prioritized over reactive treatment.

  • The healthcare system must shift focus from just providing hospitals and medicines to stopping diseases before they spread.

"Strengthening the healthcare system and protecting people from getting sick is our top priority," he added.

This initiative marks a significant step in reforming Pakistan’s public health infrastructure and highlights the government’s intent to invest in long-term solutions for a healthier future.
